- Located on a Marine Terrace on the Pacific Tectonic Plate at the Western edge of the North American continent
- Historically defined by the vast Coastal Redwood Forest and the Gualala River with its seasonal flows
- Originally occupied by a tribe of Pomo natives, Gualala became a site for lumber operations in the 19th century but is now focused on tourism
